Matcha latte at home, iced or hot: no whisk needed

Short answer: drop a Mad Tea Matcha pod into your Nespresso® Original machine, press Lungo once and add up to 110 ml of your own milk. For an iced matcha latte, brew straight over a glass with a few ice cubes, then top with cold milk. For a full cup of matcha tea without milk, press Lungo twice. No whisk, no bowl, no measuring. Our pods are compatible with most Nespresso® Original machines, but not Vertuo.

What you need

Graphic on a lime background: a small cone-shaped Mad Tea pod next to a larger dome-shaped Vertuo capsule crossed out in red, with the words 'Check your Nespresso machine for compatibility! Not for Vertuo Nespresso machines.'

  • 1 Mad Tea Matcha pod
  • A Nespresso® Original machine (not sure which one you have? Our Original vs Vertuo guide walks you through the check)
  • Up to 110 ml of milk: dairy, oat or almond all work
  • A glass or mug, plus a few ice cubes if you're making it iced

Iced matcha latte (about a minute)

  1. Put a few ice cubes in a glass. Fewer cubes are better: melting ice waters it down.
  2. Set the glass under the spout, drop in a Matcha pod and press Lungo once, so it brews straight over the ice.
  3. Top with up to 110 ml of cold milk.
  4. Stir and taste. Want it stronger? Use a little less milk next time.

Hot matcha latte

  1. Put a mug under the spout, drop in a Matcha pod and press Lungo once.
  2. Add up to 110 ml of warm milk. If you have a milk frother, froth it first for a foamy top.
  3. Stir and taste.

Full cup of matcha tea (no milk)

  1. Drop in a Matcha pod and press Lungo.
  2. When it stops, press Lungo again with the same pod in place.
  3. Drink it hot, or brew it over a few ice cubes for an iced matcha tea.

Pressing Lungo twice and then adding milk dilutes the flavour, so keep the double press for a cup without much milk.

Why you don't need a whisk

Making matcha from powder usually means sifting, measuring and whisking until there are no lumps. With a pod, the matcha is already measured and the machine does the mixing, so there's no bowl or whisk to wash afterwards. You choose the milk and how much of it.

What's in the Matcha pod

A green Mad Tea Matcha pod resting on matcha powder

  • Ceremonial-grade matcha with Longjing green tea.
  • Full ingredient list (from the label): Sugar, Matcha Powder (17%), Green Tea (Longjing) (9%), Natural Matcha Flavour.
  • Lightly sweetened with sugar, so taste before you add any more.
  • No milk powder, creamer, vegetable oil or emulsifier in the pod, so the milk is up to you.
  • 10 pods per pack.
  • The pods are vegan, dairy-free and lactose-free. Your latte is too if you make it with a plant milk.

Which milk should I use?

It's down to taste:

  • Dairy milk gives a rich, creamy latte, especially full-cream.
  • Oat milk is creamy and slightly sweet.
  • Almond milk is lighter, with a gentle nutty note.

Whatever you choose, start with less than 110 ml and add more to taste.

Storing your pods

Keep the pods in their sealed bag in a cool, dry place. Once the bag is open, finish them within two months.

FAQ

Do I need a whisk or a frother?

No whisk. A frother is optional if you like a foamy hot latte.

Is Mad Tea Matcha sweetened?

Yes, it's lightly sweetened with sugar.

Does it work in a Vertuo machine?

No. Vertuo machines use a larger, barcoded capsule. Our pods are compatible with most Nespresso® Original machines. See our Original vs Vertuo guide.

Why does my matcha latte taste weak?

Usually it's too much milk or too much ice. Keep to one press of Lungo plus up to 110 ml of milk, and use fewer ice cubes. Our brew guide has more tips.

Can I use plant milk?

Yes. Oat, almond or dairy all work; pick the one you like the taste of.
